DIY homework station

Hi friends!! We are SO excited to reveal our homework station today! We’ve been working SO long on this project and have done EVERYTHING ourselves. We wanted a fresh, clean and modern space that complimented our home since this room is open just like the rest of our house. This space needed to flow with the design and style of our interior but I also wanted it to feel very fresh, young and fun. I wanted a space where my kids WANT to hang out and feel comfortable in.

This room started off very white. I just had it painted the same color as the rest of my hallways is a creamy white (don’t know the exact name because our paint was actually a disaster and I had to go back and have the paint re tinted white TWICE! So, long story short… I have NO idea the cream color it started off as.) I painted it first a blue green color and decided it wasn’t quite right (I’m SO picky with my greens and blues.. and this color is both!) So, then I added some grey and a little cream to the paint and made it more of a creamy bluish with a hint of turquoise (I know, your thinking I’m SO crazy about now!) Well, after I painted it the second I decided I LOVED the color and the guy at Home Depot let me name my own color!! So fun!!! Next came the planks… I had to BEG the homedepot guy to cut 5 sheets of 1/2 inch plywood into 6 inch strips. I went on off hours and was really nice to him 🙂 Next, we sanded and painted the boards with our sprayer for a smooth finish. I loved the height that they were, so I kept them that height and didn’t have to cut them.. phew! After we installed the vertical shiplap, we added a picture ledge (because originally, I was going to put pics up on the ledge until I realized the wall was way too tall for that!) This room was a process you guys… It is so long and narrow and tall that it took me a couple tries to get everything to look good! So, after many attempts on the picture frames, I finally decided on 4 large (ok GIANT 24″x24″ frames which I found at Hobby Lobby) Then onto the lights… This also took me FOREVER and couple tries to get perfect. Finally I decided on two lights from world market. I fell in love with the simplicity and affordability of the drawers I found at Ikea. The black was PERFECT! Next up came the butcher block countertops from lumber liquidators. I LOVE them!!! They are thick, durable, beautiful and oh SO HEAVY!!! We had to get 2 pieces. Since this room is 16 ft long and the longest piece they had was only 12ft. So the hubs had to cut, put together and then we put SEVERAL coats of polyurethane on it! I found the CUTEST chairs at word market on clearance because they were discontinuing them. They were different colors and I knew I wanted to paint them anyways. So first I painted them all white then painted the seat black. I thought I would love them but they just didn’t pop like I wanted them to. So then I got the bright idea to paint them blue like the wall! Well, I painted them and they were so dull! So I REPAINTED them you guys… this is the FOURTH COAT!!!  Ahhhh…. I finally went super bold, and mixed my own paint color up. I took the original color and added a ton on dark blue and a little terquoise just to make them really pop… and it worked!! Halllefreakinlujia! I stocked up on supplies from Ikea, we put in the pictures I took, we added a couple curtain rods to hang art on, I found the perfect from rugsusa.. and we were set!!! Phew…
